Letter D Activities for Preschool

Today I’m sharing a sampling of our letter D activities for preschool.

(Update: I published this post years ago when my children were young. Now that I have more time, I’ve created a done-for-you alphabet curriculum perfect for preschool!)

Letter D Activities

We

I like to start with my collection of free letter books. My three-year-old likes listening to these simple alphabet books and pointing out “big D” and “little d.”

We

Another favorite is our free little letter book collection. Each book has six rhymes or songs just right for toddlers and preschoolers.

We

He worked on our free letter D dot sticker page, but wasn’t interested in doing it all by himself. We took turns putting down dots. Since he’s getting kind of tired of these, we might try covering the circles with something different next week.

We

We kept it simple for crafts this week. He painted with Duplos and made a dinosaur craft using half a paper plate. I didn’t get a picture of the dinosaur (it’s so easy to miss the sunlight on these dreary winter days!), but you can see both ideas in our collection of eight letter D crafts.

We

It was fun week for math, because we pulled out some dice activities. He rolled a die and made that many dots on a paper plate.

We

He rolled a die and made a tower with that many blocks.

We

He was able to do this free monster dice match game (almost) all by himself.

We

He’s still not ready to write letters, but I drew a letter D in pencil and helped him cover it with dice. This way he’s still building the letter and working on his fine motor skills – without attempting something that I know would frustrate him.

We

For sensory play I looked at Pinterest for a dough recipe. He caught a glimpse of this magical melting dough from Growing a Jeweled Rose and wanted to try it. Since it had just a few ingredients, we gave it a shot. It kept him busy while I cleaned the kitchen!

We’re reading books all week long! See all 19 letter D books in this post.

We

We like to do name activities as often as possible. This week I typed his name using a big font and cut it into pieces. It was part of a collection of name activities I found at Play to Learn Preschool. This was tougher for him than I’d anticipated. I guess we need to do more puzzles!

We've got crafts, math activities, free printables, a book list and more - it's a huge <a href=collection of letter D activities!" width="335" height="342" />

Each week we’re sure to do at least one activity that involves the whole alphabet. This week we read Alphabeep a number of times. On each page he named the letters. It’s hard to believe that a month ago, when we started Letter of the Week, he knew just a handful of letters. Now, in just our fourth week, he recognizes almost all of them!

But as you can see, Letter of the Week is just our framework for lots of early learning activities. We’ll be continuing on even though he recognizes most of the alphabet.
