Academic Advising

The Academic Advising Center helps currently enrolled students with their academic futures, from developing an academic plan to choosing the best courses to smoothly transfer to a four-year school. We can also help clarify course requirements or refer you to support services if needed.

Do you know what you want to be doing five years from now? Career Services has valuable resources that can help you recognize your interests, skills, and values and explore career options.

Counseling

Kirkwood Counseling Services is free and confidential to all enrolled Kirkwood students. Counseling is available via in-person appointments or virtual Zoom meetings. Click below for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Financial Aid

The Financial Aid office helps eligible students navigate the financial aid options that make affording college a reality. Financial aid is based on individual need. Aside from loan programs, other sources of aid include grants, scholarships, and work-study programs.

Food Pantry

All currently enrolled Kirkwood students are invited to receive pre-packaged perishable and non-perishable grocery items from our Student Food Pantry once-a-week – at NO cost.

Global Learning

Kirkwood Global Learning is responsible for international student admission, international student services and advising, study abroad programming and advising, and managing several international grant programs. They serve as a crossroads for faculty, staff and students from around the world who seek educational opportunities.

Learning Commons

Located in room 52 of the regional center, the Learning Commons provides students with quiet spaces to study, computers, and study support.

Test Center

The Kirkwood Regional Center at the University of Iowa Testing Center supports students and community members by proctoring a variety of academic and certification exams.

Writing Center The Writing Center helps students at any level or ability to improve all aspects of their writing. 380 Express Bus

Kirkwood is offering discounted rides on the 380 Express bus for students commuting between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids. A limited number of discounted passes are available for the upcoming year, so submit your application for a pass today!

Iowa College Access Network

ICAN empowers Iowans to achieve their educational and career goals through statewide comprehensive outreach, initiatives and partnerships with schools, groups, and businesses. The program helps more than 300,000 students, parents, and education professionals prepare for college each year

Through ICAN, the Kirkwood Regional Center at the University of Iowa can help students at any stage of the planning process, from determining career choices, to lining up colleges that offer the appropriate programs and majors, to coming up with a strategy to finance it all.

Workplace Learning Connection

Fully embedded in the learning experience at the regional center, the Workplace Learning Connection (WLC) connects high school students with businesses to provide job shadows and internships. Our programming aligns with many “hot jobs” students want including health care occupations, engineering, and education.

WLC staff members located in the main office of the Kirkwood Regional Center at the University of Iowa can help you get connected to future careers through work-based learning.

Southeast Iowa STEM Club

STEM graduates are in great demand to meet current and future workforce needs. Created with the goal of increasing STEM interest and achievement, the Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council is a collaboration of bipartisan Iowa legislators, educators, businesses, nonprofits, students, and families focused on improving STEM opportunities and awareness in Iowa.

The Kirkwood Regional Center at the University of Iowa is continuously looking for ways to engage educators, businesses, and community organizations to strengthen the STEM pipeline from school to careers.

General College Help

Meet with on-site staff members about financial aid options, scholarship opportunities and for advice of registering for classes. Learn more about Kirkwood's student services.

Library

Check out materials from the library and have them sent to the Jones Regional Education Center for pick-up. Search the Kirkwood library database for textbooks and periodicals. Requests may be placed and directed to students with a two-three day turnaround. Reference librarian support is available by telephone.

Computer Lab

JREC has a computer lab open daily for student use. Check your email, do research for class projects or type up a term paper all from the comfort of the lab. We offer the Microsoft Office suite, COMPASS Testing and Career Search Services. Our staff is available on a limited basis for students with course projects and assignments.

Testing Services

Make-up Exams have to be approved by the instructor before they can be scheduled. The instructor must send a written approval form or call the center. You will need to call ahead and set up a time to take the make-up exam.

Online Tests are given at specific times and require a 48-hour notice when scheduling. Please call ahead to set up a time to take your exam. When you call to schedule your testing time, you will need to provide the following information:

Accuplacer and ALEKS Placement Tests are also scheduled by appointment. Please call ahead to set up a time to take your placement test.

Study Support

Study Support Services are offered free to part-time or full-time Kirkwood students enrolled in credit classes. The college offers three forms of study support: individual, group and online.

Individual support is conducted in-person, with one learning assistant per student. Students and learning assistants meet at the Tippie-Mansfield Center, the Belle Plaine Community Library or any other approved location. These sessions may take place during the day, evening or weekend hours.

Group and Online Study Support Services are available at Kirkwood's Learning Commons in Cedar Rapids.

Are you passionate about sharing knowledge and uplifting others? Consider becoming a Learning Assistant! Empower your peers, gain valuable experience, and receive training.

If you would like to be a learning assistant, stop by the Learning Commons office and fill out an application. Learning Assistants must have an overall GPA of 3.00 and have earned a B+ or better in the course(s) they would like to provide study support for, or have the approval of the instructor.
