The Records Bureau is the central repository for all police records, and complies with the NJ Division of Archives and Records Management (DARM). The bureau provides copies of reports to the public for a small fee, enforces the Township Alarm Ordinance, collects fees and releases Impounds, oversees Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR), processes Gun Permits and Licensing, collates Discovery Reports, and researches OPRA requests.

The below form is to be used for individuals requesting a records check of themselves, generally required in an application process. Please note, In order to maintain integrity of the process and respect to privacy. the applicant must appear in person or submit an original notarized application confirming identity. Notarized applications shall contain the raised seal of the Notary.
If you cannot release an impounded vehicle in person, a second party can receive possession of your vehicle by submitting the below authorization. The authorization shall be notarized, and all of the instructions on the authorization letter must be followed. Notarized applications shall contain the raised seal of the Notary.
The Firearms Unit is assigned within the Records Bureau. Please go to the Firearms Applications page if you wish to apply for an ID card or Permits. Please note that all Permits issued by the State after April 1st, 2021, will be electronic and cannot be picked up in person.
Police reports will be made available in person 3-5 business days following your incident. Some reports may be delayed or redacted depending on the circumstances of the investigation.
Accident reports are available online immediately following the completion and approval of the report. Some reports will be available the same day, but some may take longer if there are extenuating circumstances. Please visit Lexis/Nexis to see if your report is available.
Print and fill out the application (Section A by applicant and Section B by your Medical Practitioner) and bring completed form to the Edison Police Records Bureau for processing. The temporary placard is valid for no longer than 6 months from the date of issue and can only be re certified once, for a period not to exceed 6 months. Please include a $4.00 check or money order made out to “NJ MVC” must accompany this form.
Certified Edison Residents with valid ID and proof of residency, may apply in the Records Bureau for a Letter of Good Conduct, subject to a background check. If you are not an Edison Resident with official documentation of Edison residency, you may apply for a similar letter from the New Jersey State Police at (609) 882-2000 ext. 2918.
